Santa Monica's formula for "building community" is a unique blending of its incredible natural resources, the activism of its diverse citizenry, and the expressed commitment of government leaders to sustain and enhance the built environment as a legacy for generations to come.

In the past five years, the entire Santa Monica community has embarked together on an ambitious journey to improve its public places.

Community members have successfully advocated for more green, open space and tree-lined streets.

> Parents have formed planning committees and raised funds for new recreational and educational facilities.

> Youth have designed their own play areas and raised the funds to construct them.

> Neighborhood organizations have canvassed their neighborhoods, inviting participation in community design workshops and identifying critical quality of life issues.

> Boards and Commissions have thoughtfully reviewed proposed designs for important community projects.

In response, the City Council, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and Santa Monica College have significantly increased funding for the "building of community."
