The Dedication of the New Santa Monica Veterans' Memorial

Palisades Park at Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Blvd. honoring those who serve to perpetuate peace for all. The new Veterans' Memorial consists of striking stone columns aligned along a path, symbolizing the important contributions made by the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The columns cast shadows at 11:11 and align with the setting sun on Veteran's Day, November 11.. Music, aircraft flyovers and dedication ceremonies.

Eight young writers have written short one-acts that will be performed and directed by their adult partners. Each play has to have a character in it that is, in one way or another, out of this world. "War Songs" is a performance piece written and read by 50 people from all over the world-Peru, China, Cuba, England, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and all across America-each of them swept up in events that would change their lives' soldiers, war brides, interned Japanese-Americans, workers on the home front, concentration camp survivors.

It begins with Pearl Harbor and ends with loved ones coming home front the war after V-J Day. Based primarily on the work of Emeritus College students, "War Songs" is compiled and edited by playwright Mary Jane Roberts, and directed by Jerry Evans, Emmy-Award winning director. "War Songs" is sponsored by Emeritus College at Santa Monica College.

Digital Time Capsule, A Public Video Scrapbook 10-1 PM Virginia Avenue Park & Farmers Market The Digital Time Capsule, A Public Video Scrapbook is a time capsule that you won't have to wait to open.

This "time capsule" records the iam2m you on digital video tape. Everyone from three to 103-years-old is invited. The resulting video-taped chronicle of many voices and faces will be edited into several half-hour programs and broadcast on CityTV. The Public Video Scrapbook will be available at the Santa Monica Public Library and the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum.

For information call: 310.434.3431. 1/31 The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) 40th Annual Literature and Arts Competition SAVE THESE DATES-January 31, 2000 and March 1, 2000 The NCCJ 40th Annual Literature & Arts Competition in partnership with the City of Santa Monica and Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus is sponsoring the iam2m Contest-Wheels of Change-A Multicultural Kaleidoscope.

This city-wide project will involve community members of all ages in the creation of poetry, essays and visual art around this common theme. All entries will be reviewed by a NCCJ panel of teachers, poets and visual artists.

Winners will be announced and prizes to First, Second and Third Place winners in all categories will be awarded at a special National Conference for Community & Justice Awards Ceremony on May 10, 2000. Santa Monica Bank and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District are contributors to the awards.

All selected poems, essays and art will be displayed on the iam2m web site.

Admission: Free The Santa Monica Festival uses the arts to explore the diverse cultures found in both historic and contemporary Santa Monica as well as the unique coastal environment that has sustained this unique seaside community.

Two stages present Southern California's most exciting performing artists while in a nearby tent, story telling delights children and informs parents of the rich diversity found in the world of spoken word and poetry.

Spread throughout the Festival grounds are children's arts and crafts workshops, demonstrations of traditional crafts by local artists and artisans, crafts vendors, and distributors of products for a sustainable planet.

The Food Court is filled with a delectable assortment of traditional cuisines. Together these elements combine to commemorate the deep cultural legacy and perfect environment of the City with Southern California's most exciting art community.

As part of the City's Millennium Observations, this year 2,000 seedlings will be distributed to festival-goers to further enhance Santa Monica's community forest.

Attendees can also participate in the iam2m Digital Time Capsule, a Public Video Scrapbook which will record participants' hopes and dreams for the upcoming millennium on digital video tape.

The completed Digital Time Capsule will be edited into a series of half-hour programs for exhibition on CityTV and available for viewing at the Santa Monica Library.
