When it comes to making art, both the presenters and the audience are involved. The idea of the audience as making art may be an unexpected idea.

We're all familiar with artists of the visual world. Painters. Sculptors. Installation artists. We're familiar with artists who compose, play and perform music. And artists who dance, and stage and film actors. Writers are artists.

But then there is the audience. People who appreciate what they see and what they hear. You can think of the audience in the way the poet T.S. Eliot did:

11/12-13-"Out of this World"—Miles Playhouse Millennium Series

OUT OF THIS WORLD is from the Virginia Avenue Project's advanced playwriting program. Eight young writers have written short one-acts that will be performed and directed by their adult partners. Each play has to have a character in it that is, in one way or another, out of this world. Some of the beings include: Destiny, Giver, an Alien, Trash, a Blue Pony and Sigh of Relief. 10/1999-"Dance For All"—American Academy for Dance and Kindred Arts

2/2000-Tuesday through Friday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm, The Dance For All classes include all 3rd graders in the SMMUSD who come with their entire class for one hour a week for ten weeks. The program engenders development in three areas:

* Creative/artistic expression
* Mind/body coordination
* Physical strength and agility

"War Songs" is a performance piece written and read by 50 people from all over the world-Peru, China, Cuba, England, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and all across America-each of them swept up in events that would change their lives… soldiers, war brides, interned Japanese-Americans, workers on the home front, concentration camp survivors. It begins with Pearl Harbor and ends with loved ones coming home front the war after V-J Day.

Based primarily on the work of Emeritus College students, "War Songs" is compiled and edited by playwright Mary Jane Roberts, and directed by Jerry Evans, Emmy-Award winning director.

"War Songs" is sponsored by Emeritus College at Santa Monica College.

1/31-The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) 40th Annual Literature and Arts Competition

SAVE THESE DATES-January 31, 2000 and March 1, 2000

The NCCJ 40th Annual Literature & Arts Competition in partnership with the City of Santa Monica and Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus is sponsoring the iam2m Contest-Wheels of Change-A Multicultural Kaleidoscope.

This city-wide project will involve community members of all ages in the creation of poetry, essays and visual art around this common theme.

All entries will be reviewed by a NCCJ panel of teachers, poets and visual artists.

Winners will be announced and prizes to First, Second and Third Place winners in all categories will be awarded at a special National Conference for Community & Justice Awards Ceremony on May 10, 2000.

Santa Monica Bank and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District are contributors to the awards.

All selected poems, essays and art will be displayed on the iam2m web site.

More information will be available on this web site in November, 1999.

3/2000-"Land Art Against Land Mines" by Christophe Damian. A major temporary art installation of stainless steel leaves representing still active land mines left from conflicts worldwide will cover the beach north of the Santa Monica Pier.
